SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education will step up opportunities for more students to take part in sports and it has appointed a team to study ways to enhance sports and aesthetics in schools.

To do this, the ministry will provide better career pathways for sports and aesthetic educators.

390 schools have registered for the Sports Education Programme this financial year.

The programme gave out a total of S$2.3 million to 342 schools last year.

The ministry will also aim to provide every school with an indoor sports hall and targets to equip eighty schools with synthetic turf pitches for soccer and hockey.

Eight new Junior Sports Academies will also be set up to encourage excellence and raise the quality of sports training in Primary 5 and 6 pupils.

The academies will include three new sports - soccer, shooting and fencing - on top of its current six - badminton, netball, swimming, table tennis, wushu and track and field.

Education Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said: "One clear need is to provide better career pathways for sports and aesthetic educators. Greater specialisation of such officers, both in training and deployment will improve the delivery of such programmes in schools. A body of such professionals can also do much in promoting their craft as well as raise standards in schools, as they share best practices and engage with like-minded professionals overseas." - CNA/vm
